Note invagination and entrapment of low cuboidal metaplastic bronchiolar epithelium between fascicles of smooth muscle. When seen in cross-sectional profiles, these epithelial clefts appear as tubules. Although cellularity is moderately dense, smooth muscle does not show anaplasia or prominent mitotic activity.
