P. RUBEN KOEHLER M.D.1, WILLIAM T. BOWLES M.D.1, and WILLIAM H. MCALISTER M.D.1

1 From the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and the Department of Surgery, Section of Urology (W.T.B.), Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri

Fifty-three children underwent permanent urinary diversion. Ileoureterostomy was performed in 43, ileocystostomy in 10. Fifty-eight per cent of the children have been followed for periods longer than 5 years. The best results were obtained when the upper urinary tracts were normal prior to surgery. When the upper tracts were dilated prior to surgery, the vast majority of the children improved on showed no change. There were 7 deaths in this group. The most common complications were calculus formation and stomal stenosis. The calculi usually appeared more than 5 years after surgery.
