EXTRAPERITONEAL PERFORATIONS OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT

MALCOLM C. HILL M.B.1, WILLIAM P. BIEBER M.D.1, ROBERT L. KOCH M.D.1, and WALTER COULSON M.D.1

1 From the Department of Radiology, University of California School of Medicine and the San Francisco General Hospital, San Francisco, California

Extraperitoneal perforations of the gastrointestinal tract, although uncommon, may be fatal if not recognized.

The clinical and roentgen features of 5 cases of extraperitoneal perforation are described. In all, one or more of the following roentgen signs were seen: extraperitoneal gas, obliteration of normal extraperitoneal fat lines, and abnormal position of nasogastric tube. Usually an alert roentgenologist will be able to provide the diagnosis earlier than can the clinician.
