Extraperitoneal perforations of the gastrointestinal tract, although uncommon, may be fatal if not recognized.
The clinical and roentgen features of 5 cases of extraperitoneal perforation are described. In all, one or more of the following roentgen signs were seen: extraperitoneal gas, obliteration of normal extraperitoneal fat lines, and abnormal position of nasogastric tube. Usually an alert roentgenologist will be able to provide the diagnosis earlier than can the clinician.
