Fracture of the tip of a plastic guide wire occurred during the performance of selective internal carotid angiography. The embolized tip was successfully removed from the distal internal carotid artery with the aid of systemic hypothermia and artificial maintenance of an elevated blood pressure. Fortunately, this is a rare complication of angiography and can be reduced in frequency by meticulous attention to detail and careful examination of equipment prior to the performance of the procedure. The potential hazard of the plastic guide wire in this case is emphasized.
