A nonsurgical percutaneous approach utilizing the internal jugular vein for insertion of a transvenous pacemaker catheter is described.
Pacing can be rapidly accomplished, since a cut-down is not necessary nor is a frantic search for the external jugular vein necessary in the critically ill patient.
It is a relatively simple technique and one that can be easily performed by any physician who has had percutaneous catheterization experience.
