1. Residual barium in the bowel, when superimposed over the liver, can produce localized areas of decreased uptake on a scan and thereby a false positive finding. This was detected clinically and confirmed by experimental means.
2. A scout roentgenogram of the abdomen is recommended immediately prior to the scanning of abdominal organs.
