ULCERATED ATHEROMA OF THE CAROTID ARTERY: ARTERIOGRAPHIC APPEARANCE

FRANK E. MADDISON M.D.1 and WESLEY S. MOORE M.D., F.A.C.S.1

1 From the Departments of Radiology and Surgery, University of California School of Medicine and the Veterans Administration Hospital, San Francisco, California

Ulcerated atheroma of the carotid artery with its consequent thrombogenesis and embolization has been considered a cause of transient cerebral ischemia.

The diagnosis of ulceration was made by arteriographv in 25 of 43 surgically proved cases and suspected in an additional 13.

Arteriograms in multiple projections and of good quality to show the carotid bifurcation are necessary for the correct diagnosis.

"Screening" arteriography, with oblique views of the bifurcation area of the carotid artery, does not adequately rule out this entity.
