A case of almost complete disappearance of intracranial subarachnoid pantopaque over a 20 year interval is presented, and is believed to be the only report of such a follow-up in either length of time or extent of absorption. It is also noted that the patient showed no clinical ill effects during this period attributable to the contrast medium in the intracranial subarachnoid space.
A brief review of the literature concerned with iodized oil and oil-like myelographic contrast media is included, with reference to their persistence in the subarachnoid space, their possible effects, and theories of their rates and mechanisms of absorption.
