A unique roentgenographic and pathologic presentation of massive calcification of the brain in a child with the clinical and osseous manifestations of congenital rubella is described.
Although no viral or serologic evidence of this or any other infection was found, the etiology was presumed to be rubella.
A roentgenographic similarity does exist between this calcification and that seen in 2 infants with a congenital herpes virus infection. The clinical manifestations of the latter were quite different, however, and bone lesions were absent.
