In vitro tests of TammHorsfall urinary mucoprotein mixed with currently used urographic contrast agents are reported. A viscid gel could be induced in certain concentrations; acidification increased such protein precipitation.
These findings, in terms of the trend to higher pyelographic dosage, suggest the need for caution in the use of dehydration. The patient most at risk seems to be the azotemic patient with low urine output who undergoes infusion pyelography.
