FURTHER EVIDENCE ON THE ACQUIRED NATURE OF SPONDYLOLYSIS AND SPONDYLOLISTHESIS

JOHN W. BEELER M.D.

The use of pre-employment roentgenography of the lumbosacral spine led to the incidental discovery of a Grade 1 spondylolisthesis of L-4 on L-5 with bilateral spondylolysis in a 20 year old man in whom roentgenography 6 years earlier had revealed intact neural arches at this level. Repeated episodes of moderate injury incurred in the course of a very athletic career are thought to be responsible. This would suggest trauma as a probable etiologic agent and substantiate the work of others6,8,9 in linking trauma with the etiology of spondylolysis.
