CHEST ROENTGENOGRAMS IN RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS: HIROSHIMA-NAGASAKI

HAJIME NAKATA M.D.1 and WALTER J. RUSSELL M.D.2

1 Department of Radiology, University Hospital of Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio.
2 Chief, Department of Radiology, Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission, Japan.

A study of all serial chest roentgenograms of 89 patients with definite rheumatoid arthritis of peripheral joints revealed involvement of the thoracic skeleton in 11. Ten of these had acromioclavicular joint involvement; 5, glenohumeral involvement, but none had coracoid abnormalities. Lung and pleural abnormalities were seen in 18. One case showed erosions of ribs and scapulae, which are rare in this disease. These findings further emphasize the need for careful scrutiny of chest roentgenograms for these abnormalities.
