ROENTGENOGRAPHIC DIAGNOSIS OF PACEMAKER FAILURE

MALCOLM M. MCHENRY M.D. and CHARLES E. GRAYSON M.D.

Up to this time, insufficient attention has been paid to the importance of roentgenographic studies in identifying pacemaker malfunction. Nevertheless, conventional roentgenograms and fluoroscopy can substantially aid the surgeon in identifying the cause of a pacing failure. Roentgenographic examination of the batteries may occasionally aid in determining the ideal time for replacement. Roentgenographic evaluation of the patient with a permanent transvenous pacemaker should be done before he leaves the radiology department to ensure that optimum catheter position has been attained.
