PNEUMOMEDIASTINUM IN NEWBORN WITH ASSOCIATED DEXTROPOSITION OF THE HEART

EDMUND A. FRANKEN JR. M.D.

Three cases of pneumomediastinum in neonates presented as dextroposition of the heart mimicking congenital heart disease with dextrocardia. The anatomic basis for cardiac malposition in pneumomediastinum with associated circulatory effects is discussed. It is proposed that the roentgen diagnosis of intrinsic cardiac malposition be withheld in the presence of significant pneumomediastinum.
