PATTERNS OF PULMONARY INTERSTITIAL DISEASE

T. H. JOHNSON JR. M.D.1, A. GAJARAJ M.D.2, and J. H. FEIST M.D.3

3 Department of Radiology, Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A critical review of the pulmonary patterns of 80 different causes of interstitial diseases evolves 5 basic patterns of interstitial disease.

The 5 distinctly recognizable appearances are: (1) connective tissue pattern; (2) lymphatic pattern; (3) bronchial pattern; (4) deposition pattern; and (5) vascular pattern.

When the basic patterns of interstitial disease are recognized, then the grouping that demonstrates this pattern best can be searched for the specific diagnosis. Information concerning these groupings or sets of diseases can be combined with the evolution pattern of the disease for a specific diagnosis.

This method of approach promotes a rapid identification of disease processes.
