RADIONUCLIDE IMAGING IN THE DETECTION AND DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF CRANIOPHARYNGIOMAS

A. EVERETTE JAMES JR. M.D.1, FRANK H. DELAND M.D., FRED J. HODGES III M.D., HENRY N. WAGNER JR. M.D., and WENDY A. NORTH M.I.R.

1 Advanced Fellow in Academic Radiology of the James Picker Foundation, recommended by the Committee on Radiology NASNRC.

Craniopharyngiomas are uncommon benign, sellar or suprasellar neoplasms of congenital origin. The brain scan pattern in craniopharyngioma consists of an abnormal accumulation of radioactivity arising from the sellar region and extending superiorly. This lesion will be more often detected by multiple views. When the brain scan is analyzed concomitantly with skull roentgenograms, other diagnostic possibilities can usually be eliminated.
