Indium 113m can be simply and rapidly prepared so that it binds to serum transferrin upon intravenous injection for use as a placental imaging agent. Its desirable biologic and physical properties allow administration of multimillicurie amounts which yield clearer and better definition of the uterus, placenta and normal surrounding vascular structures than possible with previously used agents. The relationship of these normal anatomic structures provides reliable information for interpreting the relationship of the placenta to the uterine os. Use of the gamma camera shortens the time required for one view to about 5-6 minutes. Interpretation of the images is usually simple and by means of multiple views has proven accurate in 95 per cent of our cases.
