Sr85 SCINTIMETRY OF THE HIP IN OSTEOARTHRITIS AND OSTEONECROSIS

WILLIAM P. CRUTCHLOW M.D.1

1 Fellow in Orthopaedics.

Sr85 scintimetry was performed on 195 hips in 116 patients who were classified as being normal or having superior, medial, or mixed osteoarthritis, and osteonecrosis with and without secondary osteoarthritis.

Evidence is presented to suggest that Sr85 scintimetry may be useful in demonstrating early osteoarthritis prior to its roentgenographic appearance, and that some cases of idiopathic osteoarthritis may indeed be due to a prior episode of spontaneous osteonecrosis.
