Marked changes in exchangeable sodium (Nae) and potassium (Ke) levels have been observed in 9 patients treated with ionizing radiation. There was generally an increase in the Nae/Ke ratio due to an increase in exchangeable sodium and a decrease in exchangeable potassium. These changes were more severe with larger integral doses of radiation. Other contributing factors may be trauma of surgical procedures, variation in food intake, and concomitant administration of cytotoxic drugs (in 2 cases).
Further studies in progress will use whole body counting methods to reduce biologic variability and permit more detailed studies.
