THE AVULSIVE CORTICAL IRREGULARITY

W. JACKSON BUFKIN M.D.

The avulsive cortical irregularity is commonly observed in children and adolescents along the posteromedial aspect of the distal femoral metaphysis. The described lesion has a highly characteristic location and roentgenographic appearance with some variation produced by the developmental stage.

The inciting stimulus for the development of the lesion is believed to be the intense mechanical stress in this area of active bone remodeling which results in repeated microavulsions of the cortex along the site of insertion of a portion of the adductor magnus muscle.
