BEAM QUALITY MEASUREMENTS IN DIAGNOSTIC ROENTGENOLOGY

E. DALE TROUT D.SC. and JOHN P. KELLEY B.S.

This study indicates that the twentieth-value layer is a meaningful and useful beam quality specification which, when applied with correction for exposure rate, can be used to predict the roentgenographic exposure required for a single-phase, three-phase, twelve-pulse, and equipment operating at higher frequencies. It would be our recommendation that, in the diagnostic area, the half-value layer be retained for determination of beam filtration only. When specification of beam quality is to be used in predicting roentgenographic exposure, we would recommend that the twentieth-value layer be used, applying the necessary correction for exposure rate.
