The incidence of cholelithiasis in sickle cell disease patients above the age of 10 years is increased and rises markedly in the third decade, reaching 62 per cent.
Our study indicates that all patients over 10 years of age with sickle cell disease should have a routine oral cholecystography to establish the presence or absence of gallstones. This information would be especially valuable in subsequent care of these patients who often suffer episodes of acute abdominal pain.
