COMBINED GASTROINTESTINAL AND GALLBLADDER ROENTGENOGRAMS USING FAT ADDED TO BARIUM MEALS

RICHARD L. BILBREY M.D.1 and EDWARD BUONOCORE M.D.2

1 Resident, Department of Radiology.
2 Chairman, Department of Radiology.

One hundred and eleven patients were examined using fat added to barium in combined gastrointestinal and gallbladder examinations.

There was opacification of the common bile duct in 9 patients and of the cystic duct in 51 patients—a significant increase from the pre-fatty meal roentgenograms.

This is an effective method of improving the visualization of the biliary structures in combined gastrointestinal and gallbladder studies, without unduly lengthening the time of examination or unfavorably affecting the barium meal gastrointestinal study.
