A simple, safe technique of wedge bronchography and bronchiolography, allowing selective catheterization and filling of selected small airways supplying one or a few secondary lobules, is described.
Opacification of the acinar components of the secondary lobule was achieved and correlation of the roentgenographic filling with histologic sections is reported.
Of all the materials tested, aqueous media, i.e., tantalum suspension in human serum and calcium tungstate suspension in human serum, were the most useful.
Tantalum suspended in human serum was shown to be a most superior means of reliable selective filling of acinar and alveolar components of isolated secondary lobules and should provide a useful agent for further research studies.
