1 Department of Radiology, Francis Delafield Hospital, New York, New York.
A series of 42 cases of localized bronchioloalveolar carcinoma of the lung is reviewed.
A roentgen sign characterized by a nodule with peripheral linear streaking was found in 57 per cent of these patients.
Correlative pathologic-roentgenologic studies indicate that this sign ("rabbitear" or "tail" sign) probably represents a desmoplastic host reaction to the tumor resulting in the formation of thick, collagenous strands extending along interlobular septa and blood vessels. A pre-existing scar is also frequently present.
The important role of the radiologist in the recognition of this type of lung cancer is stressed.
At the same time, the radiologic limitations in differential diagnosis from chronic granulomas are pointed out.
