LIVER SCANNING AS A METHOD FOR DETECTING PRIMARY LIVER CANCER

REPORT ON 100 CASES

E. U. BIELER M.D.1, B. J. MEYER M.D.2, and C. R. JANSEN M.D.1

1 Division of Life Sciences, Atomic Energy Board, Pretoria, South Africa.
2 Department of Physiology, Medical School, University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa.

Primary liver cancers appear on the liver scan as areas where uptake of the scanning agent is absent.

However, this pattern may be simulated by secondary carcinomatous disease of the liver or, more seldom, by benign disease.

Scintigraphic findings, as the visualization of intrahepatic metastases, extent of liver involvement and severe enlargement or deformation of the liver, are in correlation with other Parameters; i.e., survival time and functional abnormality, which indicate the stage of advancement of the disease.
