Internal and external carotid angiography was used to precisely localize the site of hemorrhage in 2 patients with severe, uncontrollable epistaxis.
Following angiography, ligation of the internal maxillary artery in each case resulted in prompt and permanent cessation of the bleeding.
The potential role of angiography in patients with intractable epistaxis is discussed and the possible use of vasoconstrictor drugs infused at the time of angiography in an attempt to control the hemorrhage is considered.
