PRIMARY MYCOTIC ANEURYSM IN INFANCY AND CHILDHOOD

The literature is reviewed and a case is reported with mycotic aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta in a 10 month old infant following beta streptococcal septicemia.

Aneurysms in children are a rare occurrence and mycotic aortic aneurysms are reported in only 13 cases to date. Although mycotic aneurysms are characterized as occurring in the wall of diseased aortas, only 3 of the 14 children reported had any associated aortic disease (in these aneurysm was distal to an area of coarctation).

Primary mycotic aneurysms follow septicemia and have a high incidence of rupture secondary to necrosis of the wall of the affected vessel.
