The roentgenograms in 28 patients with hollow viscus injury caused by blunt abdominal trauma were reviewed.
The findings re-emphasize the frequently subtle abnormalities found in these patients. Free intraperitoneal air was uncommon. Loss of distinctness of the psoas margin or constant, mottled bubbles of gas lying outside the usual confines of colon warrant further investigation with water soluble contrast medium.
The initial abdominal roentgenograms in these frequently difficult to examine patients must be of the highest diagnostic quality to avoid missing the diagnosis and because of the markedly increased morbidity and mortality that accompanies delayed exploration.
