PULMONARY INFARCTION SECONDARY TO BRONCHOGENIC CARCINOMA

BARRY T. HELD M.D.1 and STANLEY S. SIEGELMAN M.D.2

1 Director, Department of Radiology, Booth Memorial Medical Center; Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology, New York University Medical Center.
2 Director of Diagnostic Radiology, Johns Hopkins University.

Extrinsic partial compression of lobar pulmonary arteries by bronchogenic tumor, associated with focal peripheral infarct is presented in 2 patients. Slow flow in arterial branches between the compressed hilar vessel and the infarction was shown angiographically and patency of these branches was confirmed pathologically.

The relationship of bronchogenic carcinoma to pulmonary infarction is discussed, and mechanisms are presented which may account for the association of nonthrombotic, nonocclusive pulmonary infarction.
