ARTHROGRAPHY OF THE LATERAL MENISCUS

MURRAY K. DALINKA M.D., JAMES F. LALLY M.D., and VIJAY K. GOHEL M.D.

Double contrast knee arthrography is very accurate in the diagnosis of lateral meniscal tears.

Forty-eight of our 53 surgically proven lateral meniscal tears were diagnosed arthrographically with no false positives. The frequency of bilateral tears in our series was 10 per cent, but of those with lateral meniscal tears, 18 of 53 had medial tears. Four additional patients had prior medial menisectomies. The high incidence of double tears is significant and for this reason we believe that arthrography is indicated in all patients with presumed "in ternal derangement of the knee."

It is our belief that routine preoperative arthrography will aid in the diagnosis of the silent lateral tears and perhaps prevent the occurrence of unicompartmental osteoarthritis in these patients.
