THE FEASIBILITY OF THE PA PROJECTION FOR TOMOGRAPHY OF THE PETROUS BONE

SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN RADIATION DOSE TO THE LENS OF THE EYE

PAUL BERGER M.D., SUSAN GILDERSLEEVE R.T., and ANDREW POZNANSKI M.D.

PA view during linear tomography of the petrous bone can easily be used in about 80 per cent of children.

This results in a 20-30 fold reduction in dosage to the lens when compared to the AP view. Dose to the lens with 6 cuts in the PA projection is less than from a single AP roentgenogram of the skull.

It is strongly recommended that the PA projection be used during linear tomography of the petrous temporal bone in all children and adults whenever possible.
