The criteria outlined and summarized in Table II show no single observation diagnostic of splenic abscess.
This constellation of findings, however, in the context of a known abdominal inflammatory process, is quite helpful in differentiating a splenic abscess from other avascular intrasplenic masses. If the patient has an avascular, expansile, intrasplenic mass with irregular margins and documented bacterial seeding of the blood stream or a mycotic aneurysm, a splenic abscess should be the primary diagnostic consideration.
Moreover, it is apparent from our cases that angiography may be pivotal in the preoperative evaluation of such patients.
