The term "adult respiratory distress syndrome" is used to describe a serious and often fatal condition which may develop in any patient subjected to massive trauma, major surgery on serious medical illness.
Despite the obscure nature of the primary pulmonary insult, the syndrome presents a constant and stereotyped clinical, roentgenologic and pathologic picture.
In the present paper a brief outline of the clinical and pathologic features is given and the roentgenologic findings and differential diagnosis are discussed in some detail with illustrative examples selected from a large series of cases seen during a 6 year period.
