PERIBILIARY FAT

A NEW ROENTGENOGRAPHIC FINDING

MICHAEL S. SHAUB M.D., WILLIAM W. BIRNBAUM M.D., and HARVEY I. MEYERS M.D.

Eleven cases of branching or linear right upper quadrant lucencies due to peribiliary fat have recently been seen at LAC/USC Medical Center. No previous report of this entity was found in a review of the literature.

The significance of these lucencies is that branching or linear right upper quadrant lucencies are not necessarily gas within the biliary or portal system, but may be due to prominent peribiliary fat. These lucencies may also be of help in identifying, locating and measuring the diameter of the common bile duct when it is only faintly visualized on an intravenous cholangiogram or when its anatomic course is atypical.
