Radiology in Nicaragua: Lessons from a radiologic paramedic training effort

HD Rosenbaum and JH Hildner

The authors, during repeated visits and a sabbatical period, participated in the initiation of a program to train radiologic technologists in Nicaragua. The training program, its objectives, and the level of development of Nicaraguan radiology in 1977-1978 are described. The results achieved and problems encountered are discussed. Although the training was effective, all of the goals could not be accomplished because of political unrest. Nevertheless, lessions were learned and conclusions reached concerning future efforts to improve radiologic services in countries such as Nicaragua. These relate to economics, language barriers, governmental control, and the attitudes of native physicians and radiologists.
