CAVITARY PULMONARY LESIONS FOLLOWING NON-PENETRATING CHEST TRAUMA IN CHILDREN

OLIVER A. SORSDAHL M.D.1 and JAMES W. POWELL M.D.2

1 Tyndall A.F.B., Florida
2 Broward General Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

Three cases of cavitary pulmonary lesions following closed chest trauma in children have been presented along with a brief review of the literature. The roentgenographic findings are single or multicystic cavities often containing air-fluid levels, surrounded by a variable amount of consolidation. The clinical picture is, in general, benign with hemoptysis the most common finding. Treatment is usually dictated by associated injuries and prophylactic antibiotics are unnecessary. These cavitary lesions should not be confused with more common entities, such as lung abscess, as the differential diagnosis can be made by an awareness of the condition, serial roentgenographic findings, and the clinical history.
