On the basis of preliminary results obtained by injection of wounds with radiopaque contrast material, we can state that failure to demonstrate penetration of the peritoneal cavity is strong evidence that the peritoneum is not punctured. This is a continuing study and a full evaluation of a more extensive experience will be the subject of a subsequent report. The technique as described is simple to perform, safe for the patient, appears to be reliable and is another example of the value of diagnostic roentgenographic techniques in the treatment of the acutely injured patient.
