1. The present investigation shows that subjects given a cleansing enema solution containing tannic acid in a concentration of 0.25 per cent will, on the average, retain no more than 25 per cent of the instilled volume for longer than 20 minutes.

2. Subjects given a barium enema solution containing tannic acid in a concentration of 0.25 per cent will, on the average, retain no more than 25 per cent of the instilled volume for longer than 35 minutes.

3. Certain patients in both groups, however, may retain at least 25 to 40 per cent of

the administered cleansing or barium enema after colonic evacuation is judged complete by the subject. This retention may persist beyond 30 minutes in those persons receiving cleansing enemas and 45 minutes in those receiving barium enemas.
