NEW CONCEPTS IN DEXTROCARDIA

ANGIOCARDIOGRAPHIC CONSIDERATIONS

KENT ELLIS M.D.1, RICHARD J. FLEMING M.D.1, SYLVIA P. GRIFFITHS M.D.1, and A. GREGORY JAMESON M.D.1

A comprehensive and useful classification of dextrocardia is presented. It is based on the viscero-atrial situs (solitus, inversus, or indeterminate) and on the direction of bulboventricular loop bending during development (D or L-LOOP).

Roentgenographic examination and, particularly, angiocardiography are essential to the recognition of the various types of dextrocardia. Precise anatomic diagnosis is indicated for the frequently associated congenital cardiac malformations, many of which are now amenable to surgical correction.
