APPENDICITIS: "FUNCTIONAL" BOWEL OBSTRUCTION ASSOCIATED WITH PERFORATION OF THE APPENDIX

1. Appendicitis with perforation can be associated with "functional bowel obstruction."

2. Bowel distention, when present, can relate to strong sympathetic (thoracolumbar) nervous system stimulus.

3. Six cases of perforated appendix with significant bowel distention are herein reported.
