Four phase nephrotomography is a safe and useful examination in the differential diagnosis of renal masses. It can he performed in any radiologic department which has a tomographic apparatus. Its reliability is (directly related to the experience of the interpreter and the persistence with which he demands satisfaction of all established positive roen rogenographic criteria. Negative criteria have a doubtful place in the differential diagnosis of renal masses.

Four phase nephrotomography is valuable because: (1) poor-risk patients may safely be examined by this special procedure, possibly avoiding surgery; (2) accuracy of the procedure is reproducible from one institution to another in the range of 90 to 95 pen cent; (3) it avoids arteriotomy; and (4) its differential diagnostic yield is excellent.

About 5 per cent of patients cannot be diagnosed by this method.6 If four phase nephrotomography results in inconclusive findings, retrograde femoral aortography or selective renal angiography is recommended.
