Fig. 1 Systems biology model explains distribution of idiopathic pulmonary
fibrosis (IPF) and sarcoidosis. Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV)
occurs predominantly at bases and in peripheral lung (A). Because
pulmonary vasoconstriction is in part mediated by sympathetic nervous system
and because sympathetic nervous system causes TH2 immune bias, we
propose that distribution of pulmonary vasoconstriction will lead to relative
areas of TH2 versus TH1 bias, as shown in diagram
B. Radiographic distributions of IPF ( ), which exhibits
TH2 features, and of sarcoidosis (X), which exhibits TH1
features, correlate with proposed regions of relative TH2 and
