Kurt Amplatz
Kurt Amplatz was born in Weistrach, Lower Austria, on February 25, 1924, and graduated from the University of Innsbruck with a medical doctorate degree in 1951. He subsequently emigrated to the United States to pursue training in diagnostic radiology, which he successfully completed at Wayne State University in 1957. On completion of his training, Dr. Amplatz took a position at the University of Minnesota under Dr. Leo Rigler and spent his entire academic career at this institution, where he achieved the rank of full professor of radiology and was director of the division of cardiovascular and interventional radiology.

His academic productivity includes 629 scientific publications in the English literature, seven textbooks, 68 chapters in books by other authors, and more than 1000 scientific presentations at national and international scientific meetings.
He has received innumerable awards for his scientific work, including the magna cum laude award from the Radiological Society of North America in November 1980 and the first prize award of the Canadian Association of Radiologists in April 1981, as well as many other cum laude and certificate of merit awards from several scientific societies.
He was appointed as the first Malcolm P. Hansen professor of diagnostic radiology endowed chair in 1983, and held this position through 1993. He received a gold medal from the American College of Radiology in 1988, the Memorial Award from the Chicago Radiological Society in 1988, the 29th C. Valentine Award of the New York Academy of Medicine in 1989, and the Outstanding Research Award of the Radiological Society of North America in 1999. All of these awards were based on his academic achievements and contributions to the advancement of diagnostic and interventional radiology.
The importance of Kurt Amplatz to those of us who trained with him at the University of Minnesota can be best expressed by the words of one of his disciples, Dr. Murthy Tadavarthy, who once said, "We are indebted to our teacher, Dr. Kurt Amplatz, affectionately known as Kurt, for training us and serving as a constant stimulus throughout our lives. His teachings, wisdom, patience, and enthusiasm in the field of cardiovascular and interventional radiology carried over to his residents and fellows, who have directly or indirectly contributed to the field of vascular and interventional radiology. It is difficult to find enough praise and gratitude for the desire to excel and motivation he created in all of us."
I can safely say that there are very few individuals in academic radiology who have contributed as much as Kurt in his unselfish and cowboy-like manner to the advancement of radiology and especially of his chosen life long interest, interventional radiology. It is just and fitting that in the twilight of his brilliant professional career, organized radiology has finally chosen to honor one of its shining stars, Kurt Amplatz.
