University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, NY 14642.
By Felix S. Chew, Catherine Maldjian, and Susan G. Leffler.
Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 664 pp., 1999.$159
Radiology residents will find this book an excellent learning tool and resource. The teaching format of listing possible differentials and then giving and discussing the diagnosis is suited to the young resident at the lower end of the learning curve.
The senior resident preparing for the boards will find the book equally useful when the ubiquitous CD-ROM or Web facilities are not readily available to check out the teaching files available on electronic media, or even when he or she is tired of staring at TV screens and monitors.
Practicing radiologists, including musculoskeletal radiologists, will be equally well served by keeping this book close to the view-box to check, especially instead of searching six volumes of the musculoskeletal radiology Codex by Resnick and Niwayama (Saunders).
The nonradiologist clinician who has some contact with radiology may also find this volume useful, especially in deciphering radiology jargon.
The book certainly begins to fulfill a need for a mid level text that will bridge the gap between the bible of musculoskeletal radiology (Bone and Joint Disease by Resnick and Niwayama [Saunders]) and other excellent general textbooks of radiology.
Reading through this richly illustrated book, we found the images to be of excellent quality; however, some of our residents were put off by the small size of some of the images. Obviously they have never heard of cost containment. Some other comments were made with which we wholeheartedly agree: The images are of excellent quality. The differential diagnosis offered for each case presentation is short and succinct. The discussions are concise and pertinent.
Felix Chew and his crew deserve to be applauded on the production of this excellent book, which can serve as a textbook, a teaching file, or a review book. The book will serve its owner well for many years.
Although we did not check the correctness of all the cited references and the index, we found only one spelling error (printer's devil, if you will), which certainly will be fixed in the next edition.
Musculoskeletal Imaging covers more ground than Chew's earlier work, Musculoskeletal Imaging: The Bare Bones (Williams & Wilkins). If you found The Bare Bones useful and readable, you will enjoy this text even more.
In early February, the book was modestly underpriced at $89. The publishers recently hiked the price up to $159. Happily, at least two of us were able to get the book at the earlier price. For a price of $159, the printers do need to do a better binding job; a few leaves are coming loose in one of our copies. The copy is in constant service, and that is all the more reason the binding has to be reinforced next time around.
Many teaching files and review books are on the market, but Musculoskeletal Imaging is an authoritative and comprehensive book that deals with all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging, including conventional radiography, nuclear medicine, CT, MR imaging, and sonography. The other teaching files focus on the use of one imaging tool, whereas this text discusses the appropriate use of various imaging modalities in achieving a correct diagnosis. Dr. Chew has brought his considerable experience as a first-rate bone radiologist, an empathic teacher, and an author to put his book together.
Every radiology resident and every radiology reading room should have a copy of this excellent book.
