Teaching Atlas of Nuclear Medicine

Patrick M. Colletti

University of Southern California Los angeles, CA 90033

Edited by Kevin J. Donohue and Annick D. Van den Abbeele. New York: Thieme, 512 pp., 2000. $99

If you would like to review books for AJR, please send a cover letter stating your interest with a current curriculum vitae to Assistant Editor for Book Reviews, AJR, 101 S. Stratford Rd., Ste. 303, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

Conforming to Thieme's format, the text of the Teaching Atlas of Nuclear Medicine consists of 169 "real-life" presentations with a patient history of a specific clinical problem and good-quality medical images followed by a summary of the imaging findings, differential diagnosis, discussion, and an appropriate reference listing. Highlighted sections on "Perils," "Pitfalls," and "Controversial Issues" are coordinated with each presentation. The editors have collected presentations of 17 talented nuclear medicine—specialist contributors in a uniform and easy-to-follow format. The reader is able to view cases as unknowns, with immediate teaching feedback. Constant review of the technical protocol, although somewhat tedious, assures that the novice will understand how each of these examinations is performed.

The material is up to date and includes information on current radiopharmaceuticals, including CEA-Scan (Immunomedics, Morris Plains, NJ), ProstaScient (Cytogen, Princeton, NJ), OncoScient (Cytogen), OctreoScan (Mallinckrodt, St. Louis, MO), and Depreotide (Diatide, Londonderry, NH). Many examples of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography imaging are offered, and coincidence detection using dual-head systems is also included. Some of the myocardial scintigraphy cases use relatively dated planar imaging, although adequate examples using single-photon emission computed tomography are also included.

In summary, this teaching atlas is to be recommended for radiology residents, particularly in preparing for the American Board of Radiology oral examination in nuclear medicine. It would also be of considerable use to practicing radiologists seeking to improve their nuclear medicine skills. A satisfactory index and chapter-by-chapter suggested reading list also make this text a useful addition to any medical imager's library.
