Mucinous Cystic Tumors

Koenraad J. Mortelé

Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School Boston, MA 02115

With great interest I read the article, "Making Sense of Mucin-Producing Pancreatic Tumors," by Grogan et al. [1]. Nevertheless, I would like to focus your attention to a particular statement made in table 1 of this article. The sex ratio (M-F) for the mucinous cystic neoplasm reported is 9:1. This marked predilection for men is in contrast with other articles published on this subject, which show that mucinous cystic tumors occur almost exclusively in women [2,3,4,5].

Although I assume this mistake is due to an editing error, I truly believe this incorrect information can mislead inexperienced readers of AJR, especially because this specific clinicopathologic feature is not further discussed in the text.

I thank Dr. Mortelé for his perspicacious attention to our recent article [1]. I apologize for the inadvertent transposition of the numbers in the ratio of female-to-male prevalence of mucinous cystic neoplasms of the pancreas as detailed in table 1 of this article. Dr. Mortelé is quite right in stating that there is a preponderance of women who are at risk for this pancreatic tumor.
