By Georges Y. El-Khoury. New York: Churchill Livingstone, 752 pp., 2003.
$99
This one-volume book spans most of the classic topics in musculoskeletal imaging, with 10 sections and 97 chapters, in just over 700 pages. Representative sections include pediatric disorders, neoplasms, magnetic resonance imaging, spine imaging, and interventional procedures. Each chapter is well organized and succinctly written. Among many pertinent chapters, "Logical Approach to the Evaluation of Solitary Bone Lesions" stands out as a practical guide for tumor evaluation. The text has no footnotes, but recommended readings at the end of each chapter point the reader toward more in-depth publications. Essentials of Musculoskeletal Imaging is well illustrated with multimodal images. As expected, the image quality is good, and the captions are well-written.
The book covers more topics than the other comprehensive one-volume musculoskeletal textbooks available. Its broad scope limits the space for each topic, but the salient facts and important imaging features are still well-covered.
The preface indicates that Essentials of Musculoskeletal Imaging is intended for senior radiology residents, musculoskeletal fellows, practicing radiologists, and orthopedic surgeons. This is a manageable text that would be a good choice for residents preparing for their careers and their board examinations. In addition, the clear organization and multitude of reference images make Essentials of Musculoskeletal Imaging an excellent reference for the radiology workplace.
