On December 28, 1895, Wilhelm Roentgen announced to the world his discovery of the X-ray. The first radiologic journal, Archives of Clinical Skiagraphy, was published within 6 months of his announcement, a testament to the significance of this discovery. This journal appeared in Britain in May 1896 under the editorship of a 24-year-old medical student, Sydney D. Rowland. Also in 1896, Heber Robarts, a St. Louis practitioner of electrotherapy, started a publication in the United States, the American X-Ray Journal, to encourage medical interest in the X-ray. In 1899, John Rudis-Jicinsky, a physician practicing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, suggested to Robarts the formation of a society of physicians and others interested in the medical uses of X-rays [1].

On March 26, 1900, 15 potential members met and formed the Roentgen Society of the United States, later to become the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) to broaden its appeal throughout North America. Initially the American X-Ray Journal was adopted as its official publication. The journal folded in January 1906 because it was beset with financial problems and poor management.

In 1902, the ARRS began to publish the proceedings of its annual meeting as Transactions. In 1906, the American Quarterly of Roentgenology appeared and replaced Transactions in 1908. The monthly American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) superseded the quarterly journal in 1913. In June 1918, the members of the American Radium Society voted to publish their proceedings in the AJR. Consequently, the title of the journal was changed to the American Journal of Roentgenology and Radium Therapy with the January 1923 issue and further expanded in 1952 to the American Journal of Roentgenology, Radium Therapy, and Nuclear Medicine. The publication returned to the name American Journal of Roentgenology in 1976 [1].

This year, 2006, marks 100 years since the publication of the scientific journal of the ARRS. In the first century of publication of the AJR, there have been only 10 editors. They are Preston M. Hickey (1906-1916), James T. Case (1916-1918), H. M. Imboden (1918-1924), Arthur C. Christie (1924-1930), Lawrence Reynolds (1930-1947 and 1949-1961), Merrill C. Sosman (1947-1949), Traian Leucutia (1961-1975), Melvin M. Figley (1976-1985), Robert N. Berk (1985-1995), and Lee F. Rogers (1995-2003). The current editor in chief of the AJR is Robert J. Stanley [1].

In July 2004, during the course of my ARRS Figley Fellowship with the AJR editorial staff, I proposed that the AJR publish a list of its top 100 cited articles to commemorate the first century of the journal's publication. This would be an update of work previously reported by Felix S. Chew, the first Figley Fellow [2]. The ARRS agreed to the proposal and contracted the Institute for Scientific Information in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to compile a list of AJR's top 100 cited articles [3].

In this the list of the 100 most frequently cited articles published by the American Journal of Roentgenology during its first century, you will find the history and evolution of radiology. Each month, AJR will republish one of these classic articles accompanied by commentary by a contemporary radiologist. The goal of each commentary will be to provide historical perspective to the important role radiology has played in medicine and in the diagnosis and treatment of a particular disease. Future developments in radiologic diagnosis and treatment may also be discussed.

Republishing these classic articles is a way for the AJR to pay tribute to these authors and all of those who were involved in their publication. The success of the AJR has greatly depended on the authors because a scientific journal's reputation stems from the quality of the submittals of the contributing authors. The articles represent countless hours of human endeavor: authors collecting data and writing manuscripts, editorial staff members managing the manuscripts during the peer review process, reviewers checking them for accuracy, and publication staff members preparing the manuscripts for publication.

Let us reveal the list of the AJR's top 100 cited articles published in its first century. I hope that you will find the list fascinating. On this special occasion, I congratulate the ARRS and the AJR for a job well done!
