Saunders, 2005. 1,536 pp., $229 (ISBN: 0-7216-0270-3)
Readers familiar with the second edition of Bone and Joint Imaging will find the format of the text familiar. The first four sections (14 chapters) review important introductory material including musculoskeletal anatomy, diagnostic imaging techniques, interventional techniques, and postoperative imaging. The remaining 18 sections (69 chapters) are organized according to the major categories of diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system.
Introductory material addressing diagnostic imaging techniques has been substantially revised, with chapters on techniques such as xeroradiography and conventional tomography giving way to expanded chapters on MRI and diagnostic sonography. Similarly, chapters covering anatomy and intervention have been updated, and dedicated chapters on articular cartilage and spine intervention have been added.
Chapters on musculoskeletal diseases are well written and have been revised to reflect the most current understanding of the diseases, the role of imaging, and the relevant findings (with updated references). All major categories of diseases and abnormalities are covered, including trauma, arthropathies, metabolic bone diseases, and tumors and tumorlike lesions. Information important for achieving an understanding of each topic is included without unnecessary detail. In addition, coverage of the topics is well balanced and is not skewed toward particular diseases or categories of disease.
A major strength of the text is the numerous figures and tables that summarize important findings in many conditions, frequently contrasting them with similar-appearing entities. The book includes approximately 2,900 images with more emphasis on modern imaging techniques, including MRI, sonography, and CT.
Although the large size of the book limits its portability, a smaller text would lack the breadth and depth that Bone and Joint Imaging offers.
In summary, the third edition of Bone and Joint Imaging is an exceptional text of modern musculoskeletal imaging and would be an excellent addition to the library of any radiology resident, fellow, or practicing radiologist.
